Jeri's Sand Dunes in the horizon!
Jericoacoara. I’ve traveled extensively around South America and Europe. One of my favorite things to do on my travels, is to find a good beach and spend the day people watching and relaxing.
I have fairly high expectations as to what I consider to be a good beach: no crowds, warm water, a nearby town (so close that you can walk from your hotel to the beach) and a relaxed vibe.
For me, the best beach in the world is Jericoacoara, on Brazil’s north coast. It’s tucked away through brush and sand dunes, away from the rest of the world.
When I discovered it, I had no doubt that I had stumbled upon Paradise! The first thing that struck me was that none of the roads were paved, so sand gets in your sandals from the minute you get out of the jeep or mail bus that takes you there!
The wind whips down from the sand dunes in the morning, which creates little sand tornadoes that dance around the street. I liked to sit with a cup of coffee and watch this little show! The wind also makes for great wind surfing, which I was not very good at. I was much better at 'sand boarding (think snow boarding, but in 90 degree weather and shorts)! On at least 2 days I rented a board, bought some food and walked for miles around the sand dunes, coasting down them then slogging back up! What a thrill!
The beach itself is amazing. It runs for about a half a mile or more from the sea at low tide, and because it’s so hard to get to, I must have had dozens of square meters of pristine yellow sand to myself.
The best part of the day, as at most beaches that I’ve been to, is sunset, where most of the town climb the big local sand dune to watch it, or walk around the head point to another beach.
I frequently stayed out and partied the night away with other visitors. For a town with nothing but the beach, I had originally planned to stay for 2 or 3 days, but had to drag myself away after a week! I could have stayed forever!
This beach was the epitome of a beach! Fun, quiet, serene and lots of adventure! What a truly incredible beach!
