For the fishing lovers vacationing in Southwest Florida, I've asked long time fishing expert and skilled Florida fishing guide, Captain K.C. McKinney, of Reel Action Adventure, to share a bit about fishing and his fishing charter business in Southwest Florida.

How long have you been fishing in Southwest Florida?
I've been fishing the waters of Southwest Florida for over thirty years, now. Florida Gulf Coast fishing is some of the best fishing anywhere!

What areas are the favorite areas where you like to take folks on fishing charters?
I prefer to take folks fishing around Matlacha and Pine Island Sound, which is the waterway between Pine Island the the barrier islands of Sanibel, Captiva, Upper Captiva, to Boca Grande, the Tarpon capital of the World (from April to the beginning of August)

I like to work(drift) the flats using artificial bait. I usually meet my clients at Pineland Marina on Pine Island, so we are then fishing within ten minutes, which is one of the big reasons I like this area so much. There's no long boat rides, before we get into the serious fishing!

What kind of fish could someone expect to catch in the SW Florida area?
We enjoy fishing for tarpon in Florida, sea trout, snook, redfish, and shark.

What things should someone bring along on a fishing trip? Do you supply all of the fishing gear?
The only thing people need to bring along on a charter fishing tour, is food and drink, if they wish. A good attitude is a plus, too! I supply everything else, such as bait, tackle, Florida fishing license, etc.

What have been the most spectacular catches you've seen on your charters?

We've had some pretty good catches in the past, in this area of Southwest Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. We've caught 40" snook, 35"redfish, and huge tarpon!

One of my biggest fishing days, brought in 100 fish! Days like these are not uncommon in this fishing paradise!

What kind of fishing boat do you use?
My boat is a 23' Ranger Bay boat equipped with a full tower, trolling motor, 250 hp e-tech out board with a power pole anchor.

Is there fishing year round in SW Florida? Any times that are the absolute best times for fishing?
Fishing is good all year round here, but I would have to say that spring is the best time for fishing by far, when the water temperatures in the Gulf start warming up to around 80 degrees F. This is when the fishing is at it's best!

What type of fish are your favorite to fish for and why?
I personally enjoy going after the sea trout and ladyfish because the families I take out enjoy the non-stop action. It's great to see the young kids catch fish!

In the spring, we start getting higher tides, which make for good redfish and snook fishing, not to mention the tarpon, which start showing up after spending their winters in the back country in the shallow waters, where the water is much warmer..

Do folks need to have fishing skills or be expert fishermen go on a fishing charter?
No, not at all! We get the die-hard fisherman who are looking for that one good fishing opportunity, as well as families that just want to have a good time on the water!
Skilled or inexperienced, it doesn't matter. I'll keep you legal by letting you know if you're breaking any Florida fishing rules!
