Tarpon Springs, Florida
Tarpon Springs is a small Grecian community located in central Florida. On my last visit to Florida, I decided to check out this amazing little town.
Tarpon Springs is mainly known for it's sponge docks, although as I discovered they have much more to offer. The history of this community is exciting, dating all the way back to the late 1800's. There are guided tours of the sponge docks that are narrated and you are allowed to take pictures. I have some wonderful pictures of myself and my friends with a real sponge diver from this tour. They tell about the history of sponge diving, how it has evolved over the years, and how they still do it the old fashioned way, because the tourists are so fascinated by it!
There a tons of little lovely shops, offering clothing, jewelry, sponges, and shells.
One of my favorite attractions was the Greek food!!! Back in the corner at the end of the main road, there is a small Greek restaurant with authentic Greek food, and it is absolutely to die for!!!
If you have children, they will love the aquarium which offers guided tours, and the shops with many souvenirs to they can buy and take home and show off to their friends! As for the adults, I came home with some wonderful and all natural loofa sponges as well as some gorgeous and authentic seaside jewelry.
Visiting Tarpon Springs makes for a fun, educational and exciting day trip for the whole family.
